PUTRAJAYA: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has assured that the minority communities in the country including those in Sabah and Sarawak will not be marginalised by his\u00a0Unity Government.
\nAs such, he said Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof has been tasked to lead in resolving any problems that had previously hurt the feelings of the people of the two states.
\n“We must also be aware that certain minority communities in our country, whether Chinese or Indian, who feel that there is a pragmatic approach to marginalise or degrade them.
\n“I wish to to assure you that the Unity Government will not allow this to happen especially in Sabah and Sarawak,” he said when delivering his mandate \u00a0themed \u2018Developing Malaysia Madani\u2019 here today.
\nAnwar said Fadillah has\u00a0been given complete trust to resolve all pending matters related to \u00a0the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63) to ensure the fate of the people in Sabah and Sarawak will be\u00a0protected.
\nHe said though the agreement was\u00a0signed by the previous leaders, it was the current\u00a0government’s responsibility to fulfil what have been promised.
\nHow is it possible that after 60 years, we cannot give them\u00a0the right to decide and implement\u00a0RM10 million projects on their own, but we have agreed to allow it now,” he said adding that the MA63 meeting would\u00a0be held in Kuching, Sarawak tomorrow where most of the matters would be resolved.
\nAnwar also stressed that it was\u00a0the government\u2019s responsibility\u00a0not to allow any group or race in this country to be plagued by poverty and be left behind from\u00a0development progress.
\nThey should not be assisted\u00a0solely by\u00a0giving handouts. Instead,\u00a0the government needs to adopt an approach to free them from poverty, he said.<\/p>\n
\u201cOur responsibility is to try our best to help them break free from the shackles of poverty.
\n“I use the term\u00a0break free because we cannot be\u00a0giving aid all the time as they will continue to depend on government contributions which creates\u00a0dependency syndrome which is to become reliant on handouts so they will never break free,\u201d he said.
