KOTA KINABALU: \u00a0The zakat fitrah (personal tithe) rate in Sabah\u00a0this year\u00a0remains at RM7 per person, said Sabah Mufti\u00a0Datuk Bungsu Aziz Jaafar.
\nHe said the Sabah Islamic Religious Council (MUIS) has appointed a total of\u00a02,000 amil\u00a0(zakat collectors) and\u00a039 amil coordinators\u00a0to handle the\u00a0zakat payments in the state.
\n\u201cAll of them will be provided with authority cards to prevent Muslims from paying zakat to unauthorised individuals,\u201d he said here today.
\nBungsu said MUIS has allocated RM15 million to be distributed to\u00a046,474 asnaf (tithe recipients)\u00a0throughout this Ramadan to help them prepare for Syawal.
\nIn a related development, he said MUIS collected RM122.4 million in zakat last year, comprising zakat harta (property tithe) (RM111.7 million) and zakat fitrah (RM10.7 million), while a\u00a0total of\u00a0RM93.2 million was disbursed to\u00a082,541 asnaf.
\nMeanwhile, the Selangor Zakat Board (LSZ) collected\u00a0RM993 million in zakat last year, said its chairman Tan Sri Syed Anwar Jamalullail.
\nHe said a\u00a0total of RM922 million in zakat assistance was distributed to asnaf in 2021, an increase of six per cent from RM867 million in the previous year.
\n\u201cSome\u00a0 69,011 families from the hardcore poor and poor categories\u00a0received the zakat assistance in 2021. The increase in the number of asnaf was due to the\u00a0COVID-19 pandemic which has affected the jobs and income of many individuals,\u201d he told a virtual press conference today.
\nSyed Anwar said LZS aimed to collect over RM1 billion in zakat this year and improve its\u00a0quality of service to asnaf and zakat payers.
