{"id":10660,"date":"2022-03-13T07:58:51","date_gmt":"2022-03-12T23:58:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/jesseltontimes.com\/wpmarch2025\/?p=10660"},"modified":"2022-03-13T07:58:51","modified_gmt":"2022-03-12T23:58:51","slug":"bn-recaptures-johor-with-landslide-win","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jesseltontimes.com\/wpmarch2025\/2022\/03\/13\/bn-recaptures-johor-with-landslide-win\/","title":{"rendered":"BN recaptures Johor with landslide win"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>JOHOR BAHRU: Barisan Nasional (BN) stormed back to power in Johor tonight\u00a0with\u00a0more than a two-thirds majority win in the 15th state election, capturing 40 of the 56 seats contested.<br \/>\nUMNO contributed 33 seats to the victory,\u00a0MCA four\u00a0and MIC three.<br \/>\nIn the 14th\u00a0general election (GE14) in 2018, Pakatan Harapan (PH) ousted BN after winning 36 seats, while\u00a0BN garnered 19 seats and PAS won one.<br \/>\nBN&#8217;s win tonight also bettered its own record of winning 38 seats in GE13.<br \/>\nAmong the seats won by BN today were in\u00a0Buloh Kasap, Sungai Balang, Sri Medan,\u00a0Semarang, Parit Raja, Rengit, Machap, Layang-layang,\u00a0Kahang, Penawar, Tenggaroh, Panti, Pasir Raja, Sedili, Johor Lama, Tanjung Surat, Benut and\u00a0Kukup.<br \/>\nBN was also victorious in Pemanis, Kemelah, Bekok, Tenang, Bukit Pasir, Gambir, Serom, Bukit Naning, Semerah, Yong Peng, Parit Yaani, Senggarang, Mahkota, Paloh,\u00a0Tiram, Permas, Larkin, Kempas, Kota Iskandar, Bukit Permai, Pulai Sebatang and\u00a0Pekan Nanas.<br \/>\nPH won 11 seats, Perikatan Nasional (PN) three, PKR one and the Malaysian United Democratic Alliance (MUDA) one seat in the polls, which saw youths aged between 18 and 20 voting for the first time in elections in the country.<br \/>\nThe\u00a0Johor polls\u00a0marked the electoral debut of MUDA, Parti Pejuang Tanah Air (Pejuang),\u00a0Parti Bangsa Malaysia (PBM) and Sabah-based Parti Warisan which was contesting in the peninsula for the first time.<br \/>\nBN&#8217;s victory was spearheaded by caretaker Chief Minister and Johor\u00a0BN chairman\u00a0Datuk Hasni Mohammad, who retained the\u00a0Benut seat for a fourth term. Another multi-term winner for BN was Datuk Samsolbari Jamali, who won in\u00a0Semarang for a fifth time.<br \/>\nIn thanking voters for giving BN the huge\u00a0mandate, Hasni urged Bangsa Johor to come together to help develop and prosper the Southern Tigers state.<br \/>\n\u201cThe people of Johor want a state government that is more responsive, focused and committed to care for and lead them.\u00a0Be assured that this is my desire,\u201d said\u00a0Hasni in a Facebook post after BN was declared the winner.<br \/>\nThe Member of Parliament (MP) for Batu Pahat, Datuk Dr Mohd Puad Zarkashi, was also triumphant on his return to\u00a0Rengit, retaining the seat for BN in its stronghold.<br \/>\nJohor PN secretary and former\u00a0Menteri Besar Datuk Dr Sahruddin Jamal retained the Bukit Kepong seat with a majority of 9,873 votes, Parti Amanah Negara (Amanah) deputy president\u00a0Datuk Seri Salahuddin Ayub successfully defended the Simpang Jeram seat by a majority of 8,749 votes while Johor DAP chairman Liew Chin Tong won the Perling seat with a majority of 3,347 votes on his first attempt.<br \/>\nMUDA secretary-general Amira Aisya Abd Aziz snatched the Puteri Wangsa seat on her electoral debut.<br \/>\nHowever, the opposition suffered a major blow when Johor PH chairman and state Amanah chief Aminolhuda Hassan lost in Parit Yaani.<br \/>\nFormer Johor Speaker Suhaizan Kaiat and Johor PAS commissioner Abdullah Husin both lost in Pulai Sebatang.\u00a0<br \/>\nAlso tasting defeat were Johor Bersatu information chief Mohd Solihan Badri in Gambir, Johor Pejuang chief Datuk Dr Shahruddin Md Salleh in Machap and his deputy Nornekman Osman in Kempas.<br \/>\nTwo MPs contesting in the state polls also lost, namely Steven Choong Shiau Yoon of PBM\u00a0in Puteri Wangsa and former\u00a0education minister Dr Maszlee Malik, who contested on a PKR ticket\u00a0in Layang-Layang.<br \/>\nThe\u00a0polls saw 239 candidates from 15 political parties vying for 56 seats.<br \/>\nA total of 1,426,573 people or 54.92 per cent of the registered voters went to the polls today.<br \/>\n&#8212; BERNAMA<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>JOHOR BAHRU: Barisan Nasional (BN) stormed back to power in Johor tonight\u00a0with\u00a0more than a two-thirds majority win in the 15th state election, capturing 40 of the 56 seats contested.
