KOTA KINABALU: Parti Bersatu Sabah (PBS) president Datuk Seri Dr Maximus Ongkili is optimistic that the GRS government is the best choice for the people of Sabah, especially in the upcoming state elections (PRN).
He said that since the previous election, the people have witnessed a very active political development in Sabah.
Ongkili said among them are the drama involving UMNO leaders, the decision of several leaders to leave Warisan, and the establishment of the local party Parti Gagasan Rakyat Sabah, in line with the aspirations of the people of Sabah to make Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) a coalition of all local parties.
“My take on all these is that whatever happens, it is to the advantage of GRS.
“GRS is getting stronger, and I believe this is the best coalition to govern the state of Sabah that we all love,” he said.
Ongkili made these remarks during his speech at the PBS 39th Anniversary Dinner at the Hakka Hall here tonight.
His speech was read by PBS Deputy President Datuk Seri Panglima, Dr. Joachim Gunsalam.
Also present was PBS Premier Advisor, Tan Sri Joseph Pairin Kitingan.
Ongkili said that although PBS currently only has seven (7) seats in the State Legislative Assembly and one (1) seat in Parliament, this achievement can be improved if all parties work hard from now on.
“Our biggest challenge is to ensure that PBS remains relevant. Many new parties emerge like mushrooms after the rain, especially when the election season arrives.
“They emerge to try their luck, and some are established to split votes. These fly-by-night parties should not be given the opportunity to undermine the support of the people,” he said.
Ongkili said that PBS is not a fly-by-night party, but rather the party has been rooted in Sabah for 39 years.
“We have weathered the political storms for almost four decades. We are a mature political party, and with that experience, equipped with strong leadership and members who are resilient, visionary, and have integrity, we should be able to carve the future of Parti Bersatu Sabah.
“Our way forward is to further strengthen our sacred party and also the young leaders of PBS who will take over the top leadership positions,” he said.
