SEMPORNA: Two individuals were killed after being involved in an accident between two vehicles on Tampi-Tampi Road near here at 5.30 p.m. on Thursday.
Semporna District Police chief Supt Mohd Farhan Lee Abdullah said the accident involved a motorcycle and a Toyota Hilux car.
He said the Toyota Hilux vehicle, driven by a man around the age of 50, was said to have made a U-turn on Tampi-Tampi Road at Simpang Lauhari Semporna before being hit by a motorcycle coming from behind.
Mohd Farhan said that as a result of the collision, the male motorcycle rider in his 20s and his 16-year-old passenger were confirmed dead at the scene.
“The bodies of both victims were taken to Semporna Hospital, while the driver of the Toyota Hilux vehicle has been detained to assist in the investigation.
“The case is being investigated under Section 41 (1) of the Road Transport Act 1987, which provides for a prison sentence of not less than five years and not more than ten years and a fine of not less than twenty thousand ringgit and not more than fifty thousand ringgit if convicted,” he said in a statement.
He urged anyone with information about the accident to contact the Traffic Investigator Officer of Semporna District Police Headquarters, Inspector Hemkkumar A/L Ayathuray, at 012-3650021, and at 089-782020, Semporna police station, or any nearby police station.
Mohd Farhan also advised all road users to drive more carefully and cautiously in areas where accidents frequently occur.
“The public is also advised to always supervise children when riding motorcycles and ensure they wear helmets,” he said.
