KUSKOP to give a ‘new lease of life’ to the One District, One Industry programme

KUCHING: The Entrepreneurs and Cooperatives Development Ministry (KUSKOP) will give a ‘new lease of life’ to the One District, One Industry (SDSI) programme, which has been implemented since 1992.

Its minister, Datuk Ewon Benedick, said that cabinet papers are being prepared by KUSKOP related to the improvement of the SDSI programmeme in accordance with the current needs and situation, especially modernising and internationalising the products produced under the programmeme.

“KUSKOP will continue this SDSI programme in the coming years, but we will add new breath to modernise SDSI products and give them a new identity according to the needs and current situation so that the products produced can penetrate the international market.

“The ministry is preparing cabinet papers for me to take to the cabinet meeting,” he told reporters after the closing ceremony of the SDSI Showcase programme at Plaza Merdeka Shopping Centre Kuching, near here on Sunday.

The event was officiated by Deputy Premier, Minister of International Trade, Industry and Investment cum Minister of Natural Resources and Urban Development II Sarawak Datuk Amar Haji Awang Tengah Ali Hasan.

Previously, Ewon, while chairing the National Entrepreneurship Development Council (MPKN) meeting on September 7, also discussed improving the SDSI programme by encouraging the establishment of cooperatives among the community of entrepreneurs who have been selected by amending the minimum membership to only five members to establish a cooperative.

The meeting also agreed that the National Institute of Entrepreneurship (INSKEN), a KUSKOP agency, would be appointed as the implementing agency for the SDSI programme.

Meanwhile, Ewon stated that the National Level SDSI Showcase will be held in Melaka on October 7–8 at the Melaka International Trade Centre (MITC).
